Legislative Agenda & Update... February 2017

As we officially kicked off this year's "long session" (meaning this is a budget session) of the 120th General Assembly on 1/3/2017, we are beginning to see the list of bills filled by both the Senators and Members of the House. The deadline for filling has not yet past so the lists will continue to grow over the next few days.

HERE IS WHERE WE ARE CURRENTLY

Our key piece of legislation for the year was to add Volunteers to the

Presumptive Disability Law in Indiana

We have a bill drafted, thanks to Senator Eric Koch, (R) - Senate District 44, Bedford.

This bill is still in draft form and is being reviewed currently for the Fiscal (what it is going to cost to provide)

There are currently 33 states with presumption laws enacted for firefighters with cancer as an occupational illness, and 8 of them include Volunteer Firefighters in their law.

This remains a very high priority and we will be working hard to become State #9 that believes VOLUNTEERS are just as important and should be included in a Presumptive Disability Law, addressing FIREFIGHTER OCCUPATIONAL CANCER.

There is a "second and equally important" part of this firefighter Occupational Cancer law and that is, we the members will have an added responsibility of documentation of all our life's activities with respect to making calls. One will not benefit without the other. So we are suggesting TODAY is the day you begin to document so that you will be able to answer the questions of when, why and where you think you might have contacted cancer.

As the session starts to move we will start to track bills (which will change very soon after the deadline for filing bills occurs) that may have an impact on the Fire Service. To view the bills we are tracking please visit the IVFA Weekly Bill Tracker section of the IVFA website legislative page.
